Pyracantha, or Firethorn are evergreen shrubs with thorny branches, ideal for forming protective groups and hedges which are attractive in all seasons. If left to grow without pruning, which they withstand very well, they will grow into an enormous, picturesque shrub. When planted next to walls, they will cover them effectively and grow very tall. In spring, they produce myriads of small white flowers which completely cover the foliage. Brightly coloured fruits follow. They prefer soil that is not too heavy and will adapt well to chalky sub-soils.
They are fast growers, suitable for growth in pots, best kept in full to sun to half shade and resist pollution well. Good for borders and rock gardens.
